The government is set to declare a nationwide lockdown from next Monday (April 5) as coronavirus infections have risen at an alarming rate. Soon after the news spread, a huge crowd of buyers was seen in different markets of the country.
According to various sources, panic shopping has started in different markets of the capital. People are flocking to the market to buy daily necessities. Some people are returning home after buying extra quantity of products at once. Considering the lockdown situation, many people have started stockpiling daily necessities. Crowds of people have also been noticed in the city's shopping malls. Some people have also improved their Eid shopping on the news of lockdown. In this opportunity, the sellers are keeping the prices of the goods of the buyers higher.
Mahabub Hasan, who is shopping from Begunbari in the capital, said, "I am a little worried about what will happen next." It is not possible to say how the price of a product increases if it falls into lockdown. It usually takes one sack of rice a month at home, but I bought two sacks of rice thinking of lockdown.
Another buyer said his back was against the wall. The prices are not being kept as per the list of items hanging in the market. The sellers are taking the price of everything.
Yusuf Mia, owner of Yusuf General Store, a wholesale grocer in Kawranbazar, said the number of shoppers in the market has suddenly increased since this afternoon. We are struggling to handle the buyer. The way the trading is going on and if it continues for a few hours our stock will run out.
In this regard, the Commander of the Legal and Media Wing of the RAB, Khandaker Al Moin, said, "We will take strict action if any unscrupulous clique raises the price of daily commodities by capitalizing on the lockdown."
